Description
“good day, good night” is Hong Kong-based photographer South Ho’s photo documentary about “The Umbrella Movement”; the occupations that took place in Hong Kong in the fall and winter of 2014, most generally in advance of universal suffrage.
South Ho works both as a photojournalist and artists. “good day, good night” is presented in both guises in 61 square format and 3 two page black and white photographs that are presented in 3 (white, grey and black) unstapled portfolio-like booklets contained within another hardcover portfolio.
“good day, good night” also contains a brief introduction from South and bi-lingual essays by local critics
John Batten and Law Lok Man.
The photographs are at once spectacular and everyday, showing moments of police/protester action along with the more prosaic details of the occupations. As South Ho states in his introduction, “One year has passed, and I stretch out my hand, touching the substance that flows out of the furnace. The outer layer has cooled down and become hard, and within there is still consistent heat”.
